FOUR PLUS CODY OUT TO IMPRESS AGAINST POSH
Tuesday 20 July
Four Gills triallists tonight will be under the spotlight against League One Peterborough United trying to provide manager Andy Hessenthaler with confidence that they are worthy of a contract for the coming season.
The triallists hoping for contracts are goalkeeper Lance Cronin (pictured left), defender Tony Sinclair and midfielders Danny Spiller and former Ajax youngster Stanley Aborah.
In addition new striker Cody McDonald will be out to impress the Priestfield faithfull on his home debut that he is the man to fill Simeon Jackson’s boots and score the goals that will ensure promotion come next May.
Of the four triallists, Andy Hess looks almost certain to offer ex-Ebbsfleet goalie Lance Cronin a deal. However, the other three, due to mixed pre-season performances so far, need to finally convince the Gills manager for a contract offer.
Andy told kentnrews.co.ok, “I’d like to do something with Lance, as he’s shown enough. As long we can afford it I think he would be good competition for the number one jersey, as Alan Julian has to be kept on his toes.” Hess continued, “The other three have all done well, but I think after the Peterborough game we’ll make a decision.”
Cody McDonald (pictured right at Calais in Gills colours) is also out to impress but knows he has some "very big shoes to fill" following 42 goal Simeon Jackson.
Cody, who made his Gills debut in the 4-0 victory over RUFC Calais on Saturday, said: "I don't know Simeon but the Gills players say he's a good lad and hopefully he goes to Norwich and does a really good job for them and that I can do the same here.”
Cody continued, "I'm paid to score goals and I'm looking to doing that for Gillingham. Hopefully we can get back into League One because the Club is far too big to be in League Two and getting back to League One should be the start of a stepping stone for things to come."
Andy Hessenthaler is pleased to have McDonald on board but is also keen to use some of the transfer fee to buy another goal scorer saying, “I think we’ve got to look at trying to bring in someone else.”
“We need a combination there to get enough competition for places up front. You can see what Cody’s got; he’s very bright and tricky and has looked good in training. He’s going to be an exciting player for the team.”
Posh arrive at Priestfield following their close 2-3 home defeat against Premiership Aston Villa who managed victory with the help of two sensational first-half goals from Ashley Young and John Carew. Martin O'Neill's side also had the combined skills of Brad Friedel, Richard Dunne, Stiliyan Petrov and Stuart Downing in their starting line-up.
