HESSY: IT WAS A GOOD GAME AND A GOOD TEST
Monday 26 July
Speaking to BBC Radio Kent after playing two pre-season friendlies against Bishop’s Stortford and Ebbsfleet United on consecutive days, Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler said, “We changed the team around from the night before and used the opportunity of playing two games to give the majority of our squad ninety minutes under their belts and that was the exercise.”
He continued, “In an ideal world we probably wouldn’t have played the two games, but Liam Daish phoned up and it’s a nice pitch here and they’re local so it was a good friendly to use for both teams. We got a lot out of it last night and again today tested our fitness.”
Commenting on it being played with a competitive edge that occasionally became a bit feisty, Hessy added, “You can say they’re friendlies, but when they cross that white line and when that balls’ been played, it’s always going to be competitive but it was a good game and a good test.”
“First-half we passed the ball very well without perhaps hurting them enough, Second-half we dropped off the pace a little bit and let them back in and to be fair to them they looked the better side for a while.
Then we felt we needed a change to our shape and it worked in the end because the goal we scored came from a wide area, with a good pull back by Benno and young Stefan (pictured right) deserved his goal.”
Hessy added, “We’re working on him as he’s going to be a talent, I’ve been really pleased with him”
