At least Eaves was impressed with the long ball hoof saying, “Second half we showed a lot of energy, put them on the back foot quite a bit, it was a lot more promising. Conor Wilkinson did well when he came on, we had really good spells and were unlucky not to get the victory.”

Tom Eaves continued, “It takes the load off me playing with Wilkinson and lets me take a chance a bit more in behind and play on the shoulder a bit more. We changed it, it worked for us and we stretched the play really well. We are happy with the point, a bit disappointed not to win.”

There is another selection problem for Steve Lovell, as midfielder Mark Byrne (pictured right) who has just returned to the side after hamstring problems, has a broken bone in his hand.

Byrne will see a specialist for an opinion on the break, sustained in the game against Bury, but Lovell is hopeful Mark Byrne can play on Saturday at Walsall.

The midfielder played the final stages of the game against Bury with the injury after going up for a header and landing awkwardly.

Byrne said, “I heard it snap and knew it was broke.”

Gillingham are already missing defensive midfielder Billy Bingham after he broke his ankle in training.
