Forward another six years to January 2007 and BSkyB acquired the online sports information and gaming firm 365 Media Group in a £96m deal. Then following the closure of the company involved in hosting the relevant websites, plus a review of all the rivals websites, they gave sudden notice of termination just before the start of season 2009/10 on 1 July.

At that time a Sky spokesman said the decision was due to a lack of revenue from the network. “Sky is constantly reviewing the performance of its properties and unfortunately Rivals.net wasn’t performing as well as we’d hoped. Therefore, the decision was made to close it.”

Big Al and iblue stepped forward and the GillsConnect website and message board was born.

From the outset it was decided that it would be a Gillingham supporters daily forum completely independent, from the Football Club or it’s officials. Written by supporters for supporters, containing daily up-to-date news, comment and views from a fans point of view concerning all things Gills F.C.

No advertising was required or sought, and without these slowing and cluttering the site, it enabled free and quick access that continues to this day. The co-editors absorb the small administrative yearly costs of the GillsConnect web-site and message board as it’s a labour of love.

The GillsConnect web-site was designed with a ‘newspaper’ format showing a news vendor displaying the latest news story with easy to read access to earlier stories, features and current Gillingham Football Club statistics.

Since the GillsConnect launch there have been several regular contributors including Gills historian Roger Triggs; Writer and long-term Gills fan Haydn Parry; Dick Chestnut with features on players past and present and Sam who has provided astute articles on a number of interesting topical issues.

Due to it’s continued success around the Football Leagues and on social media; the GillsConnect web-site regularly attracts 60,000 hits per day from around the World (verified by statcounter.com).

We welcome <moggygills> as our 1,000th member of our Gills supporter message board family.
