Chairman Scally continued, "The team is the most expensive one we have ever had under my reign, and the club's history." The League One Play-offs were still in the sights of some supporters at the time of Pennock’s appointment, and possibly the new Gills Head Coach, but the absence of wins against struggling teams in a succession of home games spoilt that ambition.

With stark reality and with Gills struggling to their retain League One status Pennock’s fellow coach Steve Lovell insisted that the club’s future is more important than his own. Lovell said, “We don’t know what is happening regarding next year. We are just working for today and we are working to get this season secure – that is our aim.” Lovell continued, “Whatever happens after that, whether they get anyone in or if we are here, I am not bothered. That is what we are fighting hard for.”

Given his current record Gills supporters are looking for more experience than Pennock is offering and although Scally is not saying a new contract is available he is still asking the management team to look for new player targets and to plan for pre-season - but that doesn’t guarantee them a job next season. Do Gills supporters want this?
